Facebook's reach grows

Last updated 16:11 04/08/2009

facebookIt seems every gadget wants to be able to hook you us up to Facebook these days.

Microsoft has already announced that soon we'll all be able to connect to Facebook and Twitter with our Xbox 360 and enlighten our friends with whatever we're doing right now, (that's me saying that, not Microsoft) and now, thanks to an email from Nintendo, we can upload photos we've taken with our Nintendo DSi to our Facebook account.

The new feature is one of the updates in the latest firmware patch for the Nintendo handheld, which upgrades the software to version 1.4.

Nintendo says the Facebook integration with the DSi lets you send photos directly to your Facebook stream, "where they will be shared with friends and stored in an album on your profile. A Facebook logo will then appear in the album section of the camera, and a Facebook icon will now be present above your picture".

What's your take on social networking migrating to home consoles? Can you see yourself sitting in front of your console, Twittering and Facebooking to your heart's content?

In a word Gerard, "No."

I can't understand the need people seem to have to inflict upon everyone else the drudgery of their daily life...

Now an adaption of something like XFire for the console market on the other hand would be useful.

I don't understand why the Xbox 360 just doesn't feature a full web browser like the PS3... then you wouldn't have to worry about implementing individual sites... because it would have access to the entire web!

Yeah i dont realllly see the need. You can network with your other friends etc with the consoles as it is.

Having it on your console seems pointless as you would be most likely using your console at home, where your laptop/PC is close by if you feel the uncontrolable urge to "network"

I have never found anything useful on Twitter. Facebook is on my PC so have no interest in doubling up and using a console to access it as well.

Sort of defeats the idea of consoles by plugging in keyboards. Without a keyboard these applications serve a fairly redundent existance.

Personally probably wouldnt use it on XBL, most of my f/book mates are not gamers.

As for Twittering twit boxes - "Its a sunny day, I am hungry and thinking about the colour blue" - seriously really I dont really care...stop sharing your meaningless thoughts with me, if I cared I would have asked!

The DSi upload-photos-straight-to-facebook wirelessly feature would be really cool, if it wasnt for the fact that the DSi has such a poor camera. You can get a 2mp camera on a $100 mobile these days, I think Nintendo just loves to overcharge for old tech. Fair enough too, people still buy it.

I think most of my friends could get by without knowing what game I was currently playing.

Meh, I have a perfectly good laptop for the rare occasions I feel like using Facebook. I don't really see the excitement.

As Mark said, I'll just use the laptop thanks. I like to keep my gaming and my socializing/browsing separate.
