No PlayTV for NZ this year

Last updated 10:14 03/11/2009

PlayTVDespite Australia getting Sony's PlayTV digital tuner later this month, New Zealand will miss out, with Sony telling me yesterday that Play TV won't be released in NZ in 2009.

I had heard rumours last week that Australia was likely to get Play TV this year and an update to the PlayStation 3 firmware had apparently readied the system for Sony's device, which has two digital HD tuners - meaning users can watch one channel while recording another. Australia will get PlayTV on November 26 and it will cost A$169.95.

I asked Sony NZ about the situation regarding PlayTV last week and yesterday, this is what it said: "PlayTV will not be launching in New Zealand in 2009. We understand that there is a lot of anticipation for the domestic arrival of PlayTV and we are working hard to make it a reality for PlayStation 3 users in New Zealand in the future.

"As you know free-to-air digital broadcasting specifications vary from country to country, which means that each market has different technical challenges to overcome. Whilst this has meant that the development process has taken longer than planned, we want to make sure that when it launches in New Zealand, PlayTV provides the best possible functionality and performance that PlayStation users have rightly come to expect.

"With this in mind Sony Computer Entertainment NZ will advise of further developments and announcements in 2010."

Sony gave no other details for the reason behind the delay. As soon as I get any more information or can pin Sony NZ down with a release date, I'll let you know.

Are you surprised at the delay or have you now lost interest in PlayTV all together? Or would you actually consider importing one, as it seems many Australians have done?

Haha what a joke

Have you tried out Borderlands yet Gerard? DLC will be available before the end of the year.

Gerard   #3   10:43 am Nov 03 2009

@George, I've only managed to play Borderlands for about 20 minutes so far - too many things get in the way! It's only my list of priority jobs this week, though along with The Ballad of Gay Tony, DJ Hero and Operation Flashpoint 2).

LOL Sony obviously cannot care about NZ as we do not have a big enough market for them! And people say Microsoft are money grabbers lol Yes Borderlands is great!

This is nearing Gran Turismo 5 proportions for its number of delays....losing interest really. May well have another solution in place by the time it arrives.

Gerard - Does the Australian version work with NZ consoles? I might do some googling on this as importing it wouldn't be particularly difficult.....

Yeah when the latest playtv firmware came out only for Aus I knew we had been screwed back even further. I've given up and imported it since it's working 99% now anyway. For what are essentially software updates - the development is pathetically slow. In 3 years they have released it in only 6 countries! Even though a lot of Europe is using the same DVB standards.

The issue remaining for us is the EPG. Since Freeview NZ won't publish more than a 10 events ahead with EIT on FreeviewHD it's not fully functional although they publish the full 7 days on satellite ironically. Either Sony are negotiating further to get it published fully or working out a method to extract it from the MHEG data (if that's even possible!)

Also, their generic talk of 2010 is sure to anger most kiwis waiting for it for 2 plus years. Sony's marketing has no clue of PR

I imported a PlayTV awhile back and with the latest update(1.21) it works great except for the limited EPG data. Which from my understanding is because Freeview NZ decided to go with MHEG5 and offers very limited EIT data.

So really thank Freeview NZ for the delay by choosing something different from the rest of the world.

Can't say it bothers me, I'm just waiting for Telstra to announce their version of the "My Sky" HD Box...

hmmm... correct me if i'm wrong but didn't I notice last week that Sony have invested in NZ's TIVO launch alongside T'Com. I wouldn't be hugely surprised if the decision to delay release of the Play-TV could be heavily influenced by Sony not wanting to support a potentially competing piece of kit when TIVO launches. TIVO already has an uphill battle if it only is usable by T'Com subscribers. Thats my 2cents worth of conspiracy theory anyway. And Gerard on another note if you haven't got into Borderlands by now you are seriously missing out. I'm seriously loving this game! PLAY IT NOW!!

To be honest i'd rather have MySky with an Xbox 360 built in.

Imagine that, party chat while watching a game of rugby

so cool.

Does PS3 have cross game chat support yet? or is that just another benefit of the paid Xbox live service?
