Can you have too much of a good thing?

Last updated 12:11 09/11/2009

HalowaypointYesterday, Xbox launched its Halo Waypoint portal on Xbox Live, a depository of all things Halo, and yesterday was also the day I wondered whether Halo could get too big for its own good and whether there can ever be too much of a good thing.

Halo Waypoint will offer "developer interviews, trailers and screenshots, exclusive video footage, community activities and the latest Halo news" as well as a system that will track Halo players' accomplishments across the numerous Halo games. If you've downloaded Halo Waypoint and are playing Halo 3: ODST or have completed the game you'll be able to also get avatar rewards, such as a ODST T-shirt, a hoodie or full ODST armour for your Xbox Live avatar.

Also, if you download Waypoint, you'll also get a monitor accessory for your avatar, modelled after 342 Guilty Spark from the original Halo game. And if that isn't enough Halo for you, yesterday (apparently, I didn't check) there was a preview epidose of the anime series Halo Legend, which is coming out on DVD next year.

The reason I ask whether Halo might be getting out of control is that yesterday, while we were shopping in Farmers for a baby present for one of my wife's colleagues, I came across Halo Wars Chronicles toys made out of Mega Blocks (sort of like Lego, but not). It was then that I thought: "You've got to be kidding me." What next? Baby outfits emblazoned with the Master Chief's visage?

There was one kit which let you build a USNC Hornet, another one let you make up a Scorpion tank - I can't remember what the others were - but they came with miniaturised figures such as Spartans and Covenant grunts and an Elite. It looked pretty cool but I wondered how much more exposure Halo could get.

There's no doubt that Halo is a huge brand for Microsoft and it's been a profitable one, and they want to leverage as much out of it as they can, but will there come a point where gamers will say "Enough is enough"? Sometimes, I feel less is more.

I haven't installed Halo Waypoint yet (I also did very little gaming over the weekend apart from some Borderlands on Friday, and some Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Batman Arkham Asylum on Saturday afternoon). I probably will even if just to get some gear for my avatar, which currently just has a light sabre from the Star Wars films, but do you think there can ever be too much of a good thing?

Short answer - yes.

I'm totally with you here Gerard - I think Halo is getting a bit overdone. It's beginning to approach Star Wars-like levels in terms of the size of its universe, but the problem is that the Halo story/characters aren't nearly as good or interesting as the Star Wars ones.

As long as the Halo games keep being consistently good I think people will retain their interest in the games themselves - let's face it, the Halo 3 multiplayer gameplay is very very good. I can't see many people buying all this extra rubbish though.

@ hadleigh

Your a funny dude, even your xmas wish list made me laugh

But onto the main point, its getting to be a bit much but soon it will just dissappear.. Coz Bungie will think up a new idea

I installed this after reading you get free avatar awards. Is a very interesting concept and was interesting to look around for a bit. If the new content keeps coming then would be good to check out once in a while but a bit on the fence overall. Does add a second layer of rewards after the initial achievements if your into that sort of thing.

I personally enjoy the Halo games (parts of Halo 2 don't count!) so probably a bit biased in finding this interesting. If they did something similar for Bioshock as an example I would not be interested (mostly because I haven't played Bioshock....one of the few in the world I imagine!).

As for too much of a good thing - Yes. Star Wars is prime example. Star Wars - Great. Empire Srtikes Back - Great. Return of the Jedi - Great. The next three - Good (excluding Ja Ja of course). Various Star Wars Games - Mostly Good especially Republic Commando. Star Wars - Clone Wars Movie thing......Oh my god what did you do to this franchise?!!

Loves me some halo3 multiplayer.. so it appeals to me.. Its good its sepearate, if it was a mandatory part of xboxlive i can see all the halo haters coming out.. they will anyway.

And yea Bungie doesnt hold all the rights so Microsoft can bring halo games out till whenever.. at the moment it isnt too much for me.

The anime it showed was shorter than the preview bungie had a month or so ago. It missed the brute fight action. Nice to have it big on the tv though..

Why do they have to even include Halo in the title? seems like the halo was just a small part of a huge story, they should move on to establish this huge world for future titles. I mean the excellent mechanics of the game sold me over the story (in the long run), Fpss' still work without giant rings.

Never really got into Halo as I was kinda brought up on playing much quicker and more taxing FPS's on PC - played a bit of co-op with mates and thats about it.

I never thought too much of the Halo universe either - it was okay but far from being original or unique - and without a strong story to back up an average engine it just wasn't for me.

I also see that we have the Zune video market place on Xbox too - but looking back at your previous post about FMJ I checked to see the sizes (and yes of course they vary per movie)... For FMJ it was 1.5Gb for the SD version and 8.5gb for the HD (1080p) version - quite a bit bigger than the 400mb estimate (but I do realise you were trying to check it using ISP bandwidth monitoring which often has a margin of error of up to 60% from what I understand).

@Scott C, yikes! I was out by quite a bit, but yes, as we known the ISP's own bandwidth monitoring isn't all that reliable. Heck, at 8.5Gb for HD, if you're on a 20Gb cap and watch two movies, you've just about used up your allowance!
