Design a game weapon

Last updated 11:40 17/11/2009

ratchetandclankThanks to all those who took the time to comment on yesterday's post about the terrorist sequence in Modern Warfare 2. It was great to see so many varied and well-thought out comments: I appreciate it.

Right, on to today's topic. Of all the video game characters that have been created over the years, without a doubt Sony's Ratchet and Clank are two of the most loved and recognised. More than nine million copies of Ratchet and Clank games have been sold in the PAL territories since the first game was released in 2002.

I've loved most of the Ratchet and Clank games (although R+C: Size Matters on the PS2 was pretty poor) and the latest game in the series, A Crack in Time, has hit the PS3, and this time you control Ratchet and Clank as they battle the evil Dr Nefarious as he tries to gain control of time itself.

In a nice touch to celebrate the fact that most of the game's weapons can be customised with a variety of mods that you find scattered around the game's planets, Sony is running a competition where you can design your own Ratchet and Clank weapon and, if you win, get it built by the fellows at Weta Workshop in Wellington.

Imagine that, your very own Weta-built weapon that you designed sitting pride of place on top of the mantelpiece. Wouldn't that be a talking point when the in-laws come around to visit?

I'm getting into the spirit of things and am in the process of designing my weapon for the game, having already done preliminary drawings this week after a brainstorming session with Master and Miss Game Junkie. I'm now in the process of fine-tuning my weapon, then I'll write up a wee blurb about it then colour it in. Sorry, but I'm not going to give you any hints on what it is.

You can find details about the competition here and the winner will be picked by Weta Workshop and Brian Allgeier, the creative director of Insomniac, the company behind the Ratchet and Clank series. The contest closes on November 28.

Do you have a most memorable game character?

For the most part, I think most of the game characters I found particularly memorable are from older games. I'm not sure whether this is a function of nostalgia or whether the characters in more recent games are genuinely less memorable.

Anyway, first on the list would have to be Minsc from the Baldur's Gate games (and his miniature giant space hamster Boo). Even if he hadn't been one of the best warrior NPC's, I still would have had him in my party purely for the constant entertainment value ("When the going gets tough, someone hold my rodent").

There were a lot of memorable characters in Sam and Max Hit the Road but probably none more so than the protagonists themselves. I played through that game countless times just because the comedic interplay between the two of them was so unbelievably good. Bosco, from the newer episodes, gets an honorable mention too.

More recently I thought GTAIV was notable for producing some good characters - Niko and Brucie being the standouts.

I played the new Ratchet & Clank... it's great! Even though its a kids game it is really fun, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to just about anyone.

Although it brings into mind an interesting concept about game reviews. This game received pretty average reviews because it didn't change the R&C formula too much, or innovate. But the problem is, with the R&C formula being so consistently good, does it deserve those reviews simply because it doesn't change?

Hey Gerard I'm already onto this comp as well, it would be an awsome prize.

Most memorable characters for me... Cloud FFVII ... Can't remember his name, but the guy out of Soul Reaver

Good luck to all you entering the comp :)

On this topic... Gamespot did a reader survey of the 10 best videogame sidekicks, and Bioware and Lucasarts collectively account for over half of them!

For me, probably Jazz Jackrabbit or Commander Keen.

Heh - yeah Morpheus - they may have had over half of them but if I'm not mistaken the winner was none other than the engimatic Dr Gordon Freeman! (Valve)

The problem with Bioware recently is that they just recycle their characters over and over and over - there hasn't been any significant changes since KOTOR. It's like they're just ticking boxes for what sorts of characters they include.

The Most memorable character for me would either be Max Payne or that guy in the suit from the Half Life series, not sure what his name is but he's always hanging around.

Sephiroth, Final Fantasy XII. 'nuff said.
