The winners of the Left 4 Dead 2 copies were Snosalmon (PC), XxEvilxX (Xbox 360), The Sceneman (Xbox 360) and G Daddy (PC). Congratulations. Is 3D the future of gaming? Ubisoft seems to think so with the release of the video game based on James Cameron's movie, Avatar which showcases 3d technology.
The video game based on the Avatar movie (here's the full title) James Cameron's Avatar: The Game arrived on my desk today. I've played it on a special 3D TV (the only one in NZ) with special glasses and while it loooked good (I swear I could have reached out and touched the tail rotors on a drop ship), I'm not sure how impressive it will look on a standard television.
Ubsoft, the publisher of JCA:TG, though, believes 3D is the future and this week Ubisoft Montreal chief executive Yannis Mallat said the transition to 3D will be as momentus as the move from standard sound to Dolby Digital.
That might be the case, but I think it'll be a while before proper 3D gaming is a reality, especially if the hardware needed to showcase the effect is going to cost you an arm and a leg to buy it. I remember playing a Sly Racoon level in a PS2 game a few years back where you had to pop on a pair of those red and blue cardboard 3D glasses. It was a start but since then there have been few attempts at incorporating 3D into games, apart from some special glasses that require a special monitor to display the 3D and some nVidia video card drivers that do a nice 3D effect in some PC games.
I've also heard that Sony is looking into implimenting 3D processing into future PS3 models using a firmware update, so that could be a much cheaper entry point into 3D gaming, but do you think 3D is the way of the future when it comes to gaming?
One game that I reckon would be super awesome with 3D treatment is Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and funnily enough, today we've got one Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (PS3) media kit which features a copy of the game and artwork, and two copies of the game (it's a PS3 exclusive so PS3 only).

Im thinking mirrors edge, with the first person running, would look awesome in 3D.
Put me down for Uncharted thanks Gerard.
As much as 3D looks good, over long periods of time it generally leads to nausia and headaches, not good for most gamers who spend large amounts of time in front of the screen...
Anyway, Uncharted 2 as a prize today, thats awesome!!! Come on lucky entry!!!!
So if Sony are thinking of 3D for future PS3's through firmware, I'd guess that the same firmware would work on current PS3's? Yay for give away competitions to btw! :D
I don't see the 3D thing taking off unless they can implement it in a way that does not require a large investment by the gamers. Movies are different as can showcase at a picture theatre. I doubt I will buy another tv, etc just to get a little more 3D in my life....have enough trouble telling normal life from games as it is....that MW2 level has me wanting to pop down to the airport!
I think 3D will be great, and Sony's plan to implement for all PS3 Gamers via a free firmware update is awesome. Not for all games, but games like Wipeout (which Sony has already demonstrated in 3D) will be even more amazing. The only drawback is for those that have already purchased a HDTV, because they'll have to buy a new TV in a couple of years to experience 3D.
In the same way game rendering moved from 2D to 3D in the 1990's (with games now almost exclusively 3D), it seems inevitable that the transition to true 3D will occur at some point in the future. Whether it be through a special tv and glasses or some other medium, 3D is something to get highly excited about!
I'm jealous Gerard - your gaming experience must have been awesome!
One more for the draw!
Good blog btw ;)
Absolutely. 3d technology has the ability to make the game that much more believable, and takes us one step closer to VR. And VR will be the ultimate expression of the videogame IMO.
I still like the idea of VR. I can't remember where I was reading it, but some smart students have made a breakthrough in contact lenses that digitally display information overlaid on your retina. So like, street names, or translations or whatever, based on what you're looking at. So it struck me that it would be a cool idea to produce games in the same fashion, perhaps have a Shambler or something pop its head out of the opposite cubicle and have to take it out. Everyone around you will think you're a complete nutter, but seriously, what better way is there to improve a droll workday?

If they can integrate 3D gaming with Microsoft's Natal or Sony's motion controller that would be really cool.
I still can't really see it catching on without some sort of simple entry point... I mean, who remembers virtual reality? I thought so!
