Favourite game character + Ratchet and Clank giveaways

RatchetandclankblogBy the time you read this, I'll be in Sydney making small talk with some American Apple execs about all things iPod and will have taken a gander at the latest build of Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption. That's one game I'm really looking forward to. I'll report on both on my return to Aoetearoa.

OK, at our house, the Ratchet and Clank series is perhaps the most played series on the PlayStation 3, mainly by my 10-year-old son. In fact, after making his way through Ratchet and Clank's latest outing on the PS3, A Crack in Time, he has decleared it the "best game ever".

The series has certainly found favour with gamers since its first release in PAL territories (that's us) in 2002, and the three outings on the PS3 - Tools of Destruction, Quest for Booty and A Crack in Time - show just how talented developer Insomniac is at eeking out every last drop of visual goodness from the PS3.  It really does look stunning.

A Crack in Time probably also has the best performance of Captain Qwark dressed as a nurse ever and it has some wonderful laugh out loud moments.

So, today, in celebration of the fact that we've got two copies of Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time for PlayStation 3 and a God of War for PSP figurine (I've got one of these watching over me at my desk at work. It's very cool) to give away, I thought I ask for your nominations of best video game character.

All you have to do to enter the competition is post a comment in Game Junkie blog to be in to win - and head over to gameplanet.co.nz to double your chance of winning. Minsc from Baldurs Gate was pretty good. General Lionheart and the main badguy (Dovincus or something) were fantastically done in Brutal Legend. Tim Curry voiced the main badguy and did a fantastic job and Rob Halford (Lead Singer of Judas Preist I beleive) did a fantastically camp General Lionheart.

I loved Raziel in Soul Reaver. Tortured character with an interesting back story, not to mention some kick-ass abilities. Lara Croft has got to be in there. If you're going to stare at the back of someone for hours at a time, why not make it a good one!

Duke Nukem would be top of my list. He's the man's man and filled to the brim with witty one-liners. Even after waiting over a decade for Duke Nukem Forever, only to be told it's been cancelled, this character still has a strong following of fans.

I'm not a Wii player or even hugely into Nintendo but in my opinion Nintendo have always taken the cake as far as creating Iconic characters. Mario, Kong and all the others are household names even to non-gamers. Still with Japan i'd say Solid Snake, Link and Samus are hugely well known. Western game development while still turning out awesome games doen't really seem to have turned out so many iconic characters. Some maybe (Crash Bandicoot perhaps although not so much this generation) but not many.
