What did you play this weekend?

Army of TwoMuch of my gaming on the weekend (most of it on a rainy Saturday afternoon before heading out to see Avatar at the movies, which I enjoyed thoroughly) was taken up with playing EA's Army of Two: The 40th Day, and while it's got flaws, I am actually enjoying it, for the most part.

The first Army of Two was weighed down too much by the 'bromance" of lead characters Tyson Rios and Elliot Salem, two mercenaries part of The World Order, a private military organisation. There was lots of fist-bumping and the only thing that was missing was hugs after every mission.

The fist-bumping has been toned down a lot in this sequel - although you still get to do it at the press of a button - and it seems the developers have listened to criticisms of the first game and made things better. Now, I'm not saying Army of Two: The 40th Day is a Game of The Year contender, because it isn't, but thanks to much smarter enemy AI and a great cooperative mode, the game is better than the original.

In fact, Army of Two: The 40th Day screams to be played solely as a co-operative affair. The single player mode is entertaining, but it's nothing out of the ordinary: evil mercenary group brings the hurt on to Shanghai and it's up to Salem and Rios to take those responsible down. Something I didn't like about the story campaign was that you could almost guarantee that somewhere in every mission you'd have to face off against a near-invulnerable chain-gun-wielding foe or a flame-thrower-carrying soldier, who could only be defeated by one of you taking all the heat while the other player crept up behind the foe and continuously shot at a strangely unprotected fuel tank or battery pack.

I'm hoping that this week I can get some more time with Bayonetta. What did you play this weekend?

I didn't get the feel of homo-erotisim from the first Army of Two and can't understand why anyone would. So they are best mates who kill people and fist bump, so what? Lots of people fist bump (less so the killing people), it's not like they tried to cop a feel halfway through missions.

Me and my best buddies on the weekend spent Saturday playing Guitar Hero in our underwear cause it was far too hot, instead of packing to move house like we should have been doing. It wasn't a sausage-fest though, my girlfriend was there but she wasn't her undies... just begging us to put our clothes back on!

Still making my way through Borderlands - didn't get in as much quality gaming as I was hoping :( only ~lvl 25 and haven't even started thinking about DLC yet...

On a side note, I was at a friend's place on thursday night and played Lego Batman co-op. It was thoroughly enjoyable & entertaining - a real surprise!! Perhaps a bit easy? I felt like we made it through about 1/3 - 1/2 of the game in a few hours, but a lot of fun nevertheless!

I slogged through some dungeons in Dragon Age. Then a friend posted on FB she has actually beaten the game. A girl even.

I went back and replayed the first Gears of War, start to finish. Thoroughly enjoyed myself.

I finished a first playthrough of Bayonetta, which is great fun if you skip all the cutscenes and turn the music off.

Anyway then I started Splinter Cell Double Agent which I got for $30 from EB a little while ago. I'm really enjoying it so far, the stealth gameplay is excellent and it rewards patience and good tactics. Based on my experience so far I'm going to have to check out the new Splinter Cell game which is out soon.

Mostly I'm hanging out for Mass Effect 2 though. It's Auckland Anniversary day next Monday... ME2 + long weekend = win.

Played very little this weekend - A little Madden 08 to complete all achievements and reinstalled Mass Effect to try and get as far through it (I stopped about half way through last time) before Mass Effect 2 arrives on Friday.

Also saw Avatar and enjoyed it. Story was pretty generic but visually stunning. 3D might fly once they figure out a way to do it without the annoying glasses though....

I'm currently totally immersed in Ezio's world in Assassins Creed 2, so all of my gaming over the weekend revolved around that. I had intended to finish Brutal Legend before starting on AC2 but couldn't resist taking a peek at the latter, and once I had I was reeled in hook, line, and sinker.

Having recently fitted my 8 year old PC with its first ever DVD-ROM drive, I have started playing Medieval 2 Total War, which came out in 2006.

I'm very excited.

My friend and I played Assassin's Creed II, I think it's much better than the original but still not really my thing (he loooooved it though).

Found a great self-help book over the weekend too! "Mastering Pac-Man", published in 1981 and totally worth every cent of the $1.00 I paid for it.
