A blast from the past
Last night I did something gamewise that I haven't done for a long, long, long time: I actually loaded up a game that I wasn't reviewing and played for enjoyment - plus it was a game that I hadn't touched for close on a year, after giving up on it during a moment of frustration.
That game was Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II, a game for the Nintendo GameCube that dates back to the early 2000s, and I guess the break helped - I breezed through the part that annoyed me first time round and am progressing well, but it got me thinking about the GameCube, a console that seemed to have had all the odds against it when it was released.
My GameCube never got the love that it deserved - and I'm a little sad about that - but I was a little late to the party, not getting it until probably 2006. And searching through my game collection last night, I realised that I've only got three games in total for the console: a Starfox one, Rogue Squadron II, and Mario Party 6 (I think).
It didn't help that the GameCube was up against the PlayStation 2 and original Xbox consoles, both of which proved far more popular than Nintendo's successor to the N64 and precursor to the Nintendo Wii. The GameCube only sold something like 22 million units in its lifetime, compared with the 140-odd million that the PS2 has sold (and it still selling) and the 24 million Xboxes sold before that console was discontinued.
I don't know when I'll finish Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II but I will finish it, believe me. Hopefully it's before Nintendo launches its next console - whenever that will be!
Gosh, it's been a week of retro action, hasn't it? What with me reminiscing about my ZX Spectrum and now replaying my GameCube. Next thing I'll be telling you about picking up my old Atari 520 ST computer from my parents' house ...
And in a piece of shameless self-promotion, if you missed my weekly radio segment on KiwiFM with Wammo this morning, here's a link to it. This morning I looked at Darksiders, a hack 'n slash game in the same vein as God of War.
So, how many of you owned a GameCube or a gaming system that faded away and is now relegated to the history books?

The gamecube was a well recieved console - really it only got the short end of the stick in NZ where Nintendo was (and still isn't) well supported. In the UK there was actually a greater range of games availabe for the GC than the PS2 for many many years - not so in NZ where the brand was run into the ground.
It's a pity - bit like the old Dreamcast.
I had a PSOne. Then discovered the collection of games I have and the console it self were worth quite a bit - so sold them all to pay for Christmas one year.
not really.....'mature' enough to have owned something truly old school apart from a Sega or a PSONE?
I have a Gamecube and N64 somewhere. I still haven't finished Metroid Prime 2 yet.
The Gamecube was a brilliant party console with Super Smash Brothers, Mario Party 4 and 5, Mario Power Tennis and Mario Kart Double Dash.
Nintendo really did a terrible job of marketing for those 2 consoles.
Still got my old Commodore 64 stashed away in the basement. Pulled it out last year and plugged it in. It still purrs like a wildcat minus it's 5 1/4 and tape drive but ready at the blinking cursor for a session of BASIC coding. Also got the PS1 on the shelf as well. Loathed to get rid of this stuff... but why?
I got a hankering for a bash at goldeneye a little while ago so i got myself a cheap Nintendo 64 off of trademe and a few games including golden eye. It doesn't get used very often but its a heap of retro fun every now and again. One thing i noticed though was that all the story line is text based none of the characters actually spoke (or if they did it was minor sounds).
I wouldnt say faded away at all, my flatmate had mine out in the weekend playing some Mario Kart: Double Dash! there isnt anything quite like getting four of your mates around and battling on mario kart just giving the last across the line all sorts of abuse.
and now and again i fire it up and play Ocarina of Time Master Quest on it, most underrated gaming system ever! all they needed to do was bring out Golden Eye on the GC (as they did OoT) and it would be sitting pride of place right next to my 360/PS3.
I loved my gamecube. I still think it's got one of the most comfortable gamepads around. Soul Calibur II was never off my tv for a while. All the lads at work used to nip round during dinner (i lived close to work) and play. Plus it had the awesome Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. I actually stopped playing it at one point, it freaked me out so much. (The bit where you see yourself, dead in a bathful of blood.) A seriously underrated console, not helped by the fact that places like EB games don't stock second hand GC games!!! Shame. :(
I owned a Sega GameGear back in the early 90's. We sold it a couple of years later as we needed some cash, and regretted it for years afterwards.
It took until the release of the Gameboy Advance before we could find something even vaguely resembling a decent replacement. But that even seemed like a downgrade due to the lack of backlight on the GBA making it almost impossible to use in anything but full daylight. That has since been upgraded to a Gameboy Advance SP, which thankfully does have a backlight (but has also been superseded by a PSP and a couple of DSis).
