I died again? Where did that come from...

Last updated 11:58 03/02/2010

battlefieldbadcompany2One game that's on my game-spotting radar for this year is Battlefield Bad Company 2, and I played some of the PC beta last night and it was thoroughly enjoyable - apart from the fact that I died lots, mainly thanks to hidden snipers.

Oh, I also died once when a guy ran up behind me, completely unannounced, and stabbed me in the kidneys. I hate it when that happens. He didn't even say "Sorry about that" either.

I only played for about three rounds as I promised myself that I'd be in bed at a decent time at least one night this week and I'm playing the BFBC2 beta on PC but I'm seriously considering downloading the demo from Xbox Live, as a couple of friends have already told me that they've been playing it and they'd love to "show me their skills", which I think really translates as: "I'd like to shoot you from a helicopter then stab you in the back several times."

I'll put it out there: I really do suck at multiplayer games. Whenever I go online - which I have to admit is not that often, but will now increase with games like BFBC2 and MAG on the horizon -  I go in with the best intentions of doing my best, assisting my team, but end up with stats that read something like this: Kills: 0 Deaths: 5. It's so depressing and part of the reason why it takes me ages to move up in rank.

So far in BFBC2 I've been blow up by tank shells, knocked to the ground by several sniper rounds, and on two occasions I was blasted to pieces by a passing helicopter. I also been knocked to my feet by some of those tripod-mounted rocket launchers. In fact, now that I think about it, during one of the sniper hits, I think the glass on my scope was shattered and I didn't even bother moving before the second round hit. I'm getting a good view of the sky, I can tell you.

I guess as gamers we all have a genre that we prefer most and one that we play most often. For me, it's probably single player campaigns and mostly action games in general. I can't really get into sports games or car racing games, unless it's something like the Burnout series where you can crash lots of stuff (note: this in no way reflects on my driving ability in the real world).

What about you? Is there one particular style of game that you genuinely suck at or won't play because you just can't get it? Tell me about it.

Oh, and if you're playing the BFBC2 beta/demo and you see me running around the battlefield, zipping from cover to cover, and you're about to sneak up behind me and stick me in the kidneys with a knife, please do me the courtesy of quietly whispering: "Sorry about this" before you do it. It would be most appreciated.

Loving It - RoriM6   #1   12:08 pm Feb 03 2010

Maybe we could team up on the blog and I will do the online stuff lol. I love online gaming and knowing that you are beating other people rather than a computer and although I dont want to toot my horn im not bad at it I finish up 99.9% of the time and even have people accuses me of glitching because they dont believe people can play that well with out it (I never glitch I think its morrally wrong and not in the spirit of the game). I also love Single player Campaigns but cant get to much into sports games even though I love sports in life.l Ha go figure

Like, you I suck at multiplayer games - the action is just too fast and I never play long enough to upskill.

Don't feel TOO bad Gerard - I wondered why I was sucking even more than usual when I realised that the recommended "Play Now!" function was putting me in servers in the UK - my latency must have been atrocious.

I manually chose an Australian based server last night and it was MUCH better.

This game is SO much fun... I love it how its hard to pick out enemies through the smoke and fog etc... quite realistic in that respect.

You are playing a battlefield beta its most likely the best of the best for team fps, in a game thats hard to play. Everyone who picks up battlefield/'any other compeditve online game' for the first time in a while is going to die a lot, you just have to keep playing and start on 'noob' servers and you eventually find you have learnt enough that every so often you get a K/D of more than 1.

I seem to remember it being really easy to do that in BF:BC1, Gerard!

I sucked at Halo 3 online to start with, but found that a lot of this was a learning curve effect... once I spent some time in the game (quite a lot), I got the hang of the maps and the strategies and eventually could hold my own, with the (very) occasional MVP award.

Mostly I like action games and RPGs, especially those with a good single-player campaign. Plus the odd fighting game (Tekken 6 or Soul Calibur IV). Not really a big fan of FPS (apart from Halo 3), or racing games (apart from Burnout, which combines ridiculously high speeds with ridiculously impressive crashes). Much as I love playing sports I'm not really into sports games either - just not the same as when you break a sweat playing the real thing.

Nice, been playing the xbox version.. what was your gamertag again?

Also rumour has it there is a multiplayer Alien Vs Predator demo coming around Friday.. another game im interested.

On-topic: Probably driving games, im much more about the Burnout or GTA type of games if I had to..

I'll take unapologetic kidney stabbing to tea bagging anyday.
