July 27: Starcraft II day

Last updated 13:00 27/07/2010

starcraftIIblogAlthough I'm not a great fan of real time strategy games, I know that today is a monumental day for fans of Starcraft: it's the day Starcraft 2 Wings of Liberty is released to the world.

Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty continues the saga of the Protoss, Terran, and Zerg races with a single-player campaign that picks up where StarCraft: Brood War left off, and comes from RPG masters Blizzard.

Today I'd be keen to hear from any one who already has the game (either retail or digital copy) and let us know what you think of it. Is it worthy of fans of RTS games picking up?

Does Starcraft II live up to your expectations or does it fall flat? More importantly, do you have the time to invest into it?

Have any of you taken time off work to play it (I won't tell your boss) or are patiently watching the clock, your copy of the game still in its box underneath your desk, until it's time to go home and install it on your computer?

Another question from that: how many of you have taken sick days or annual leave days just so you can play a game that you've been highly anticipating?

I've been having an argument with a mate that this is Star Craft II. Not a Star Craft II expansion pack.

I will admit to booking holiday for game releases before in my younger days.

Starcraft never interested me though, it seemed like there was one way to play it and no other way would work, found it quite limiting.

I read somewhere that the servers are on lock down until its available in the US.

Ive had a weeks leave for a game before.. it was damn fun. In fact I have leave coming up for September 14th.. waiting..

If all goes to plan, Diablo3 should finally come out just in time for my retirement so I dont have to book any leave for it.. haha. Yea im not that old, just patient.

I didn't go to the midnight release because I thought it'd mean I'd stay up late playing it....so instead I stayed up til 2am playing Civ IV...fail.

My copy is on my desk! I will already say that this will be an awesome game. Blizzard dont do anything less. I will be playing this hard for the next month and continue playing for the next 2-3 years just like the previous one.

@ #2 - This is part 1 of 3 for starcraft2. The other two races have campaigns that will be sold seperately at a later date.

However the multiplayer is fully functional.

So you're right and your mate is partially right.

Just picked up the game from DSE, now I have to finish work :P . Not really a fan of Blizzard but Starcraft is the best RTS ever made, and one of the best overal PC games ever.

I want to know I am not the only 50+years old fan for the Starcraft 2. Any one else?

My workmate has booked time off today - he's even marked down on the attendance board that the reason he's off is "Starcraft II". We're just hoping that it was a wasted day & the courier didn't turn up until about 1pm (cue evil laugh).
