Announcements from Gamescom

gamescomblogHello, fellow gamers. It's a rubbish day in Christchurch today and my son is home sick, so I'm working from home (and when I say working, yes, I am working on stories). I might try and get some gaming in later on today, though.

The second big gaming show of the year, Gamescom, is happening in Germany at the moment  (the other two are, of course, E3 and the Tokyo Game Show, which is in October) and I've been trolling the internet on what some of the major announcements are so far. Here are some:

* Bioware's hit Mass Effect 2 is coming to the PlayStation 3 next year.

* PlayStation 3s with larger HDDs are coming.

* Gran Turismo 5 has been dated for Europe (most likely we'll be the same, seeing as we fall under the PAL category, also).

* Windows 7 phones will sync up with your Xbox 360.

Of course, that's just some of the announcements so far, but I'm quite excited about the Windows 7 phone angle which will let owners of 360s connect to their Xbox Live account. As an owner of an Xbox 360, I find that pretty exciting. I'm also on the hunt for a new phone, so I'm interested.

Microsoft has already announced some games that will appear on Windows 7 phones, including Halo Waypoint (which, as any Xbox 360 owner will tell you, isn't really a game), Crackdown 2: Project Sunburst and Guitar Hero 5, and a puzzle game called ilomilo.

Xbox 360 owners who pick up a Windows 7 phone will also be able to check out new games, keep track of Gamerscores and send messages to fellow players. You'll also be able to interact with your Xbox Live avatar, if you want to.

It's clear that Microsoft sees Apple and its mobile gaming devices such as the iPod Touch as a viable gaming platform so wants to get in on the action. What about you, though - are you interested in being able to access your Xbox Live content through a Windows 7 mobile phone?

Also, is there anything from Gamescom so far that has piqued your interest? And PS3 owners, what's your reaction to Mass Effect 2 coming to your console?

"Windows 7 phones will sync up with your Xbox 360." This is my worse nightmare. "bing, 25GP - call made on cell phone" i dont like tech that unnessaryly syncs, i found the PSP/PS3 to be a complete waste of time IME. I think if done correctly it could be helpful but a games console and cellphone?

Unless you could play like GTA and use your phone, that would be mint.

W7 phone doesn't just link to XBL, it links with Games for Windows Live on PC as well.

ME 2 on PS3 is awesome news. While I've just finished this on PC, at least all my PS3 mates can share in the fun.

Until Microsuck actually not only announce, but also act on the re-focusing on the PC game market they have mentioned almost every year for the last decade or so they can go to hell as far as I'm concerned. Its seems retarded that the supplier of the OS used by over 95% of the PC market (92% if you include Mac) doesnt fully support the platform.

hopefully they anounce something about psp2 - the windows 7 & 360 stuff isnt very interesting. ive got a 360 and its just an expensive paper weight....havent used it in 2 years.

also interesting that ME2 coming to ps3 - that was one game all the 360 fanboys always used to rant on about...and that ps3 would never have it....whose laughing now?

@ ps3 - Yah you got ME2 over a year after the rest of the world....good for you.

Would be funny if Microsoft pulled out the cheque book and tied up ME3 to exclusive deal.....yah we get ME2 now how does it end.....oh wait a minute.....

Win Mo 7 stuff sounds interesting. As long as the phones stand up as decent phones then this is a pretty compelling reason to get one. Combining some of the features of the best online gaming platform with some decent smartphone features is is good in my opinion.

I'm not surprised that ME2 is moving to PS3. Some of you may recall that upon its release, fans had "cracked the code" and embedded in the PC and 360 copies were code for PS3.

Also not surprising because of the success of ME2's sister franchise Dragon Age on the PS3. Bioware had not foreseen that this was going to be extremely popular and have on many occasions since reiterated their commitment to the PS3 console.

@innocentD - doubt microsoft will be whipping out cheques anytime soon considering they're concentrating on kinect. Also, the PS3 version will be single disc due to the superior space available for BDs. How's disc swapping going for you? (jks)

ME2 on ps3, hmmmmmmmm that came out so long ago on xobx. im not a fan of games being on one console or the other. but there havnt been any xbox only games that ive actually wanted, untill now. a gme called sniper ison xobx and pc. i really dont want to get a game for the pc.

but in saying that, i still think ps3 gets better exclusive games than xobx.

like uncharted 2 (game of the year 2009), god of war 3, kill zone 2/3 and grand trismo 5. just to name a few.

waiting on medal of honor (just the single player tho, multi will suck) and call of duty black ops (single player, multi player and zombie mode) going to be a good year.

and early next year finally a rugby game on the ps3. has been way to long

I'm a big Mass Effect fan, and after just finishing playing ME2, I was pretty underwhelmed by it. shooting & graphics = better, story & gameplay = dumbed down. a lot of the things that made ME fun were missing, Bioware seem to have gone to attract as many non-ME players as possible & decided that making them think would be unfair... So , not surprised it's going to the PS3... :)

wazza   #9   11:04 am Aug 19 2010

...oooops, just read my previous post, & it sounded like I was starting a flamewar... what I meant was that it wasn't surprising they would port it to PS3, Bioware wanted to maximise sales. Just that the game itself had been dumbed down signifigantly from ME...

InnocentD   #10   12:37 pm Aug 19 2010

@ wazza - completly agree. ME2 was a damn fine game but pretty much acton game where as ME1 had some minor flaws but was a much better RPG experience. My hope is that ME3 incorporates the best of both games (I want inventory management and no scanning).

@ Eric - I disc swap as often as you will.....Xbox has HDD which can have games loaded to it. Hows your firmware and game updating going? Probably still going? :) (jks)
