Extended Cuts: your thoughts

Last updated 10:21 28/06/2012

masseffectblogThis week, Bioware released - at least for PC and Xbox 360 gamers - its Extended Cut ending/s to Mass Effect 3, the final game in its Mass Effect trilogy.

PlayStation 3 owners of the game, however, will have to wait until next month to get their hands on the fleshed-out endings and exposition of the game.

I haven't downloaded it yet - I haven't had time - but I'm almost tempted to just watch the endings online so I don't have to replay through the final battle on Earth again. I've played the game to the end, seen the final ending that my galactic readiness status gave me and was happy with it. Yes, it had some glaring plot holes but I'm not really convinced I need to go back and get closure on that (I probably will at some stage, though). And to be honest, I've moved on from Mass Effect 3 now: I'm playing other stuff.

The official Mass Effect FAQ page says that the 1.9GB download "expands on the endings of Mass Effect 3 through additional scenes and epilogue sequences" but doesn't alter the endings, only "reveals greater detail on the impact of the player's decisions".

Just as the original ending sequence didn't please all gamers, I suspect that the expanded endings will not please every ME3 player either.

Today, I'd be keen to hear from gamers who played Mass Effect 3 about your thoughts on the Extended Cut DLC (if you've downloaded it). Has it expanded on the ending you had - or has it just made things worse?

Please remember, though, some readers may not have finished the game yet so preface your comments with a "SPOILER" tag if you're going to get into specific detail.

The Extended Cut DLC was released this week for the PS3 as well. I know, because I played through it.

It was actually pretty good, considerably better than the original ending, rich in emotion at least even if some of the plot weakness of the original still remained. I feel if this had of been in the original game then there would never have been a problem. There is one completely new ending as well.

If you don't want to play through the last missions you should be able to pick the restart mission option and you will start from the point after you have been hit by the beam.

I couldn't be bothered downloading it. Saving that bandwidth for Dawnguard.

But I did watch it, it's all over the web - I found that while it doesn't cancel out the inconsistencies - It makes the ending more palatable. If this was presented at the start, then I do think the rage storm that errupted wouldn't have been as big.

It was done really well. There were some more cut & paste moments across all three endings but for me, it had alot more emotion than the originals.

I kinda stumbled into the new ending, which was sort of abrupt but worked, and I haven't played through any of the other three as of yet. To be honest I've been more interested in Dawnguard. Fricken vampire lords, son! They are awesome.

I thought it was definately an improvement. With a series which takes well over 100 hours to play through completely it is a relief that it now takes more than 2 minutes to wrap everything up. Some of the exposition and new scenes did seem a little forced in an attempt to pacify some of the more vocal critics, but this new version gets a "two thumbs up" from me.

@Stephen Kingsley, thanks for the update. I thought the PS3 Extended Cut DLC was for next month but clearly I'm wrong. Thanks.

How could the DLC be bad? As long as it adds something - Anything - then it could only be an improvement. Even if it reveals that the entire trilogy was nothing more than a dream sequence or a VR training program it would still give a stronger sense of closure than the original ending.

I will download it & have a look at it, since it's Free DLC. The original ending was poorly done, & needed this.

Bioware originally expressed surprise that more information about decisions was wanted... the debacle was so badly handled that it's put me off buying any Bioware/EA game new, I'm happy to wait for it to drop to less than 1/2 price, or be second hand before purchasing...

IGN has all the endings on its site, which is lucky because I cant be bothered grinding the final two levels again.

I enjoyed the extended endings, it brought the story to a more satisfying conclusion. The original was a bit too *insert your own ending here*.

SPOILERS I kind of enjoyed seeing how control and detroy played out, but it didn't solve all the issues or plotholes. I would have been fine if these were the original endings, but it's just not sufficient as DLC. It also kills the indoctrination theory.

My first issue is kind of nitpicking, but the "extended cut" subtly changed a few details rather than expanding them. Running up to the citadel transportation beam was an uninterupted action until you got hit by the reaper laser in the original ending. The new ending inserts a cutscene just before you get by the laser. The new ending also has the relays damaged instead of destroyed. If I'm not mistaken, the Normandy isn't hit by the differently colored explosions (see below). Again, I know I'm nitpicking, but it's the difference between watching deleted scenes and what George Lucas does to his movies.

Second issue is some that really wierd details are still unresolved. Anderson still isn't shown running to the citadel transportation beam in the updated scenes. When you get to the Citadel, he still arrives behind you and gets to the control room first. Their isn't a good explanation of why the Catalyst has the same form as the child on Earth/in Shepard's dreams. I don't buy that the Normandy can now barely keep up with the colored explosion, but the reapers can't even though it's established they're faster than the Normandy.

Finally-I still hate synthesis. Having the same basic DNA doesn't mean peace. I can just imagine the people on Earth saying, "Well you turned my friends and family into goo so you could make another reaper, but since we're both growing green, I'm immortal, and you can tell me about all the civilizations you wiped out, I'll forgive you."
