Unmechanical, a game featuring a small robot with a propeller on his head and a tractor beam, is my new favourite game at the moment.
Sorry Darksiders 2, but Unmechanical's adorable lead character and brain-twisting puzzles have captured my attention this week. Incidentally, Christchurch game makers Digital Confectioners helped out with Unmechanical as well.
Unmechanical is described as an adventure-puzzle game where you have to guide said small robot with a propeller on his head and little legs that flop about as he flies, out of the innards of an underground beast. At one point early in the game our little friend comes across the creature's heart and the environments are full of cogs and giant lightbulbs.
Unmechanical also reminded me a lot of that other game that features a robot on a quest, Machinarium. If you haven't played Machinarium it's a game that I wouldn't hesitate recommending. Same goes for Unmechanical.
I love playing games like Unmechanical and Machinarium because they give me hope that there is still creativity in the games industry and a good game doesn't need to have a hero that can hold weapons of mass destruction in his backpack yet still bound up walls like he's an Olympic gymnast.
And the puzzles in Unmechanical are generally more than just "place something on this plate and a door will open on the other side of the room". I say generally because while some of the early puzzles in Unmechanical are little more than pulling something to open a door, as you progress you'll find you have to use your grey matter to solve puzzles.
It helps that the robot in Unmechanical is so darn cute as well.
So do you have a new favourite game at the moment? Is it a game that is a genre that you don't usually play or is just a new entry into your favourite type of game?
