Beer and computer programming are often seen as male-dominated industries, but two young women are breaking the stereotype by creating the official app for this week's Beervana.

Victoria University students Josianne Hyson, 20, and Pragya Mohan, 22, created the app that will make finding the tastiest offerings at Wellington's festival of beer that much easier.

The app allows users to rate each beer out of five, and tallies all users' ratings to reveal the most popular beers at Beervana.

It also tracks the beers with the largest variations in ratings, so adventurous drinkers can try Beervana's "oddest" beers.

Once a user has rated a beer, the app will keep track of it, and allow users to make a wishlist.

You can also search for a beer at Beervana and the app will show you where to find it.

When Hyson and Mohan started as interns at Powershop in November, they were given the task of turning the webpage Powershop had created for last year's Beervana into an app.

"Beervana started as an internship programme over summer, something for us to learn on because we were all very green, but over the last month it's been an actual project," Hyson said.

While they had "great mentors" at Powershop, the young interns were the driving force behind the app's development.

"There were three interns working on it over the summer, we had a little help from designers, but they were busy with their Photoshop stuff," Mohan said.

It took 800 person hours to develop the app, 400 hours each for the Android and Apple versions.

Neither Hyson nor Mohan left high school intending to become software designers.

"I was set on doing design for ages, but right before university I thought 'hold on, there are kinda no jobs', then I thought 'I am interested in computers'," Hyson said. "So I did it and I don't regret it at all, it's amazing, it's so much better."
