Wellington-based internet governance specialist Keith Davidson has been elected to the main board of the Internet Society (ISOC) - an international organisation that promotes open standards on the internet.

Davidson will join ISOC's 12-strong board in August where he will take part in "a full plate of internet policy, governance, technology and development work" according to a statement from InternetNZ.

Davidson first became involved with the internet as the owner of a Wairarapa-based ISP, and soon became involved with local internet governance. He was chairman of InternetNZ from 2000 to 2004 and executive director from 2006 to 2009.

Davidson also holds international roles including governance positions within ICANN and APTLD (the Asia Pacific Top Level Domain Association) and is a member of the organising committee for the Asia Pacific Internet Governance Forum.

"Keith has been co-chair of ISOC's Advisory Council for the past two years," says InternetNZ chief executive Vikram Kumar.

"His step up to ISOC's main governance board is a first for a Kiwi and continues the tradition of New Zealander's shining on the international Internet governance stage."

In addition to its policy focus, ISOC also operates the registry for the .org top level domains - and provides the home of the Internet Engineering Task Force, which develops internet-related technical standards. ISOC has approximately 80,000 members internationally.
