Have you ever considered buying a police scanner? I certainly haven't but I did find the 5-0 Radio app for the iPhone somewhat addictive when I spent some time listening in on audio from international Police scanners recently.

What the 5-0 Radio app provides is live audio from Police, Fire, Ambulance and public safety radio feeds from around the world. Audio feeds are provided and shared by local enthusiasts who own Police scanners.

It won't help if you're interested in listening into NZ Police radio as it is generally now encrypted and not available to the general public. This is one technology area where our Police force are well ahead of many others around the world thanks to a contract with Christchurch based radio provider Tait Electronics.

The 5-0 Radio app is available for iPhone handsets in free and paid versions. There are similar apps available for other smartphone platforms.
