Telecom says scammers have begun taking advantage of the confusion caused by the hacking of its outsourced YahooXtra email service by trying to conduct fresh frauds.

Scammers were phoning customers pretending to be from the company, offering to provide assistance to customers in changing their account passwords, it said. It warned customers to ignore the calls. 

Fifty thousand of its 450,000 email customers have changed their passwords since a security hole at outsourced provider Yahoo resulted in more than 20,000 accounts being hacked and used to send out scam emails.

Telecom this afternoon urged the remaining 400,000 customers to change their passwords "as soon as possible".

It said it would today email "the first batch" of 10,000 people whose accounts were known to have been compromised and who had not yet changed their passwords. The emails it sent out would not include any website links. Any that did would also be scams, it said.

"If they do not make the change within 24 hours, they will be required to do so next time they access their email," Telecom said.

It said yesterday that of the affected customers, 5000 had changed their passwords.
