IBM says efforts to restore cloud computing services following a fault at its $80 million Highbrook data centre in Auckland have suffered a setback because of a "new technical issue".

Some companies have been left without access to the software needed to run their businesses since early Monday morning.

IBM spokeswoman Katie Burford would not disclose the nature of the original or the later fault, or say how many customers were affected. Other services hosted at the data centre were running normally, she said.

"While working to resolve the outage of New Zealand Virtual Server Services, a new technical issue was experienced which continues to affect the delivery of this particular service from the data centre," the company said in a statement.

"Our team of global experts continue to work on this as a high priority and remain committed to restoring service for our clients."

It is understood the company hopes to restore services later today.

IBM is one of three data centre providers that won a contract to provide information technology infrastructure to the Government last year and in 2011. The data centre - one of New Zealand's most modern - opened in 2011.
