According to sources close to Kotaku, the next Xbox console may ship with a Blu-ray optical drive.

In addition, Microsoft may be considering new technology to prevent used games from functioning on the upcoming hardware, which is currently referred to as the Xbox 720 by almost everyone but Microsoft.

It's not immediately obvious as to the legitimacy of these claims, however as the system is likely to be significantly more powerful that existing consoles it seems plausible that a shift to Blu-ray, which can contain more than five times the data of a DVD, may be necessary to keep pace with future gaming innovation.

In slightly less surprising news, the same source has stated that Microsoft will ship an enhanced version of their motion-sensing Kinect hardware - dubbed Kinect 2 - with the Xbox 720.

A representative from Microsoft has stated: "As an innovator we're always thinking about what is next and how we can push the boundaries of technology like we did with Kinect. We believe the key to extending the lifespan of a console is not just about the console hardware, but about the games and entertainment experiences being delivered to consumers.

"Beyond that we don't comment on rumours or speculation."

The next Xbox will definitely need something more than DVD, and Blu-Ray is the only thing left out there. Its too early going digital and having 5 disc games would just be stupid. I dont own an XBox and admit im a Sony man, but I think they need a Blu-Ray drive in there.

I also think the PS3 still has a few more years until a PS4 needs to be launched. I reckon another 2-3 years for PS3 then lets go with a PS4

Ahahahaha. As everyone is sitting there amazed with their consoles finally doing 1080p and trying to aim in an FPS with a controller I'll be sitting happily at my computer running 5760x1080 eyefinity (plus however much bezel correction changes it by) at 60+fps and actually being able to play properly with a mouse and keyboard.

The only reason I'd get a console is to play with my friends who haven't seen the light of PC gaming. Otherwise there is no point when they are inferior platforms. Sure they cost less and all you have to do is plug in like 2 cables, turn it on and pop the disc in, but a PC can do so much more.

People complain about user friendlyness. Maybe they should use initiative, muck around with it for a couple minutes, failing that, google. People will become more and more lazy until we destroy ourselves, which doesn't seem too far off anyway. But we are kiwi's and if something is a little trickier it shouldn't put us off, we kiwi's are meant to figure stuff out.

@JB #65 I agree with you about Bluray, that is quite the apt description.

When there is a website dedicated to documenting a companies marketing propaganda, I don't think it's wise to trust their statements! http://www.tiredofsony.com/?cat=9

With the ps1, ps2 and ps3 launch dates being exactly 6 years apart, if they follow that schedule, the ps4 should be due at the end of this year

Blu ray on the next gen drives is a waste of time - it is a dying technology that has never really taken off.

@Dan B - I would trust in the comments about PS3 from Sony - the PS2 and the PSone both had long life spans. I don't think Sony is about to release it but they may release something like the Vita to compliment it.

Can you guys present any actual evidence that the ps3 is not at the limit of it's capabilities? If the xbox's hardware *is* holding back crossplatform games, why do first party ps3 games, which supposedly use whole bluray disks, not look massively different to the cross-platform nor xbox 360 first party games? Since the ps3 and the xbox 360, on paper, are capable of very similar performance, why do you two expect the ps3 to be able to do more?

I think it's either very wishful thinking or you've been taken in by the usual Sony marketing bollocks

Microsoft only allow developers to release cross platform games if they are released with the same content, which has meant for the last 6 years, cross platform games have only used half the available space for the PS3 release versions. If Microsoft do go with a blu-ray drive, then the potential is there for greater cross-platform games, then everyone is a winner.

Whatever they put in it, it'll go alright, but Microsoft make sure you put a silent Blu Ray drive in it!!

The 360 is the loudest thing in my house, even my washing maching does not make as much noise.

The ps3 could easily last another four years, the current release of games don't even scratch the surface of what the ps3 is capable of. A new xbox system is required for microsoft to catch up to the ps3 because the games that will be released in the years to come will be too hardware demanding for the xbox 360. If we are yet to experience the full power of the ps3 why would we need to pay all that money for a new system just now.

This is great! I really love the Kinect side of Xbox, but on the PS3s side is the home media functionality. With the 3D tv I'd want the ps3 cos of crisper gaming, 3D bluray player and PlayTV. Plus all the other home media functions. But I long for the Kinect. Here's hoping Microsoft puts all doubt to an end!
