Canon supersizes its sensors to 120MP
Canon has set off a bomb in the camera megapixel arms race with the announcement that it will make a 120MP sensor.
The biggest sensors at the moment are 50MP with most being in the 12MP to 24MP range.
Canon said cameras with the new sensor would help to "expand the possibilities of visual expression" and "recreate the three-dimensional texture, feel and presence of subjects, making them appear as if they are really before one's eyes".
It also plans an 8K video camera and an 8K professional-use display.
Most people are still struggling to upgrade to 4K so this is a huge leap forward for Canon, which has been battling non-traditional camera companies such as Sony in the sensor market.
This week, Canon also announced a 250MP sensor to be used in industrial products such as surveillance equipment.
