Review: <i>Timeshift (PC)</i>
In the Timeshift future, it rains. A lot.
I think it rained the whole time I played the game. I should have brought an umbrella.
Set in a bleak, grimy future, Timeshift's story is that the evil Dr Krone has stolen a suit that lets him travel back in time, where he alters history and creates an alternate universe.
Luckily, there's a second time-travel suit -- the beta suit -- which you don and head back to tackle the evil doctor.
Timeshift was first mooted by Atari back in 2004 and was almost released, but wasn't considered good enough. Sierra, who bought the rights, almost started the game again from scratch.
At the heart of the gameplay is the ability to slow down, fast forward or stop time, all thanks to the time-travel suit.
It's not the first game to manipulate time, but it's done well, meaning you can capture foes unaware and take them out before they've even noticed you.
Rewinding time can also be used for the odd chuckle or two, like watching rain as it rises into the sky. I did that a lot.
The abilities recharge quickly, too, so it means you can pretty much use them as often as you want.
Like most first-person shooters, Timeshift has the obligatory puzzles that can be solved using your time-bending powers, but they won't tax you for long, and again, like most FPS games, there are vehicles to drive.
Timeshift is competent enough, but I felt it didn't make the most of its potential, and it's hard to recommend when up against more deserving first-person shooters such as Call of Duty 4, Bioshock and The Orange Box.
