First impressions of Modern Warfare 2

It might be billed as the biggest game release of the year, but not everyone was rejoicing in the aftermath of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
Launched with tremendous fanfare this week, the highly anticipated sequel to the Call of Duty is expected to eclipse the success of the original along with every other blockbuster game release this year.
While the realistic first-person action title has weathered plenty of criticism from child-protection campaigners about its M15+ rating and a scene that allows players to assume the role of a terrorist and shoot civilians at an airport, bloggers and tweeters were out in force today with their own opinions and reviews.
Amid overwhelmingly glowing reports, some critics focused on the short-lived nature of the single player mode.
"In short i think a lot of people will want to rent this game as i have as it has a very short game play unless you are a big fan of the multiplayer mode and have enjoyed Modern warfare then you won't be disappointed,” said Kdog on Amazon.
"Modern Warfare 2 is one amazing game. Not particularly long, though :\ I've finished it already" said JarZ on Twitter.
But others were more generous.
"Just finished the story mode and i would have to say that i was very surprised at the story line, it was awsome.. best 1st person shooter of the year," said Vtecroar.
"For those of you who braved the long lines and lack of sleep for the midnight release of Modern Warfare 2, you have been rewarded for your efforts. Modern Warfare lives up to and exceeds many expectations to what was one of the most highly anticipated games of all time” said Jered Schneider of the theeverythingist blog.
The game sparked controversy when leaked footage revealed players could join a group of Russian ultra-nationalist terrorists with a mission to massacre civilians in an airport.
Gaming publications were among those that expressed concern. Website GameSpot drew parallels with the mass killings in Mumbai.
Brady Fiechter from Play magazine, wrote about his response to the controversial mission. “The first time I went through this obstacle course of cold-blooded murder, I was a little shaken up. The true power of the interactive medium revealed itself; games can be much more than innocent fun, and this is only the beginning. I want more. I want to be challenged and tested and moved by games, like I was here,” he said.
EB Games opened its doors in more than 300 stores across Australia at midnight on Monday to herald the game's arrival, and the game's distributor Activision said it experienced an unprecedented number of pre-order reservations across the globe.
"It would be our single biggest and fastest selling game of all time. On Monday we opened every single store we could in Australia, and we had close to 20,000 people in our stores at midnight across Australia and New Zealand,” said EB Games merchandising director Shane Stockwell.
The new game is widely expected to outperform the original Modern Warfare, which sold 12 million copies worldwide.

#12 Liam - what games "used to be finished in a couple of hours"?
I can only think of a handful and those ones that could be were coin op types that gave you unlimited credits... Most PC games have 20+ hours and have had for my gaming life (about 25 years).
Of course for many early games the joy of the game was in the challenge and replayability. A good player could clock some in 20 minutes but they would have taken days or weeks to get tot he stage where they could even finish it...
You talk about fluff but from what I've seen of this game half of the 'playing time' is actually spent watching 3d cutscenes - and I see limited replayability in t he few hours of single player you DO get from MW2. I might play it again sometime but it is nothing compared to many great FPS that came before it in terms of AI, entertainment and storyline.
COD 4 was far better value both from a single player and multiplayer (PC gamers) perspective.
I totally agree with Blaze001! The multiplayer is awesome but it can be quite frustrating playing on a bloody American host which makes the game lag a bit. Though its ok though coz most of them a crap! Go NZ gamers, we are the best!!!!
"for all the people that are complaning about the ping get rid of ur fail interwebs lollolololololol"
american hosts buddy - 95% of your ping is based on distance, not "interwebs" speed.
This game is absolutely amazing. Don't quite understand why Kill PS3 hates PS3 because the reason isn't that obvious, unless it's the fact that there's a mouse controller for it called the FragFX that makes it a lot nicer to play than on 360, then it must be just jealousy.
People that use control pads to play this game are just kidding themselves, FPS is made for mouse, not analog sticks.
I would rather be shooting zombies...sorry! We went out and spent the money on the game and I am impressed...however let down also. I like the World at War game better...but that is just my opinion.
#37 Zak - There's no server. One of the player hosts the game and everyone connects to him. If the host has bad computer or slow up / down speed, everyone apart from him starts suffering. The players have no choice in who is the host.
What I do want to know is given that IW is controlling the map rotation, what happens when DLC maps come out? Considering you have no choice on map cycle or to whom you join to, doesn't this mean you just get kicked off the game when DLC maps rotates in and you haven't purchased it?
This game by far and away beats the rest of the COD games that have been released so far. the multiplayer mode is so much better, cooler graphics make for a quick load time and a fun game. the only downside is trying to get host or finding a host fro nz or aus, were stuck playing yellow bar(50% good connection) with the yanks who have a full green bar, but as good kiwis go we still wipe the floor with them. all in all i say this game is the best gae that has been released this year and it will take alot for this gae to be beaten.
Have it on 360, played through the campaign on normal, only took 4 1/2 hours, so a bit short, but certainly visceral and involving. Good mixture of fast paced adrenilin style gameplay and precision. I've found the multiplayer to be fine so far with no real lag problems, although I haven't had time to play much of it so far. I haven't spent any time playing spec ops yet either, but that should prove to be a splitscreen/xbl hit.
I have now trudged through this game in its entirety and am impressed at the way the story was told though in some parts it may have seemed a nonsensical series of events with many conclusions and reprecusions not answered.
In regards to the 'controversial theme" i was shocked when the scene occurred and i was suprised at my reaction to this within a video game which truly shows the medians power for deep messages.
Although i must stress that for the first section where the terroists are gunning down civilians you are not 'forced' to cooperate. I was more suprised at my own reaction which was to fire into the air hitting the roof and missing the civilians, not wanting to appear un helful to the terroists i was unde cover with.

Completely disagree with you Tim. It has one of the most engaging storylines that I've ever played, the AI is great, and it is very challenging as long as you don't choose the easiest difficulty. Honestly the bulk of people complaining about a game's length have been playing the games on easy-mode. It was a massive improvement on MW1's single-player, and the only reason it may not be everyone's favourite on the multiplayer front is because of the many screw-ups on the PC version and a few for the 360.
