Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, which includes New Zealand and Australia, will offer PlayStation Network users two free PlayStation 3 games to be selected from a shortlist of five games. Users will also be able to select two free PlayStation Portable games from a shortlist of four.

On the official PlayStation blog, Nick Caplin, head of communications at SCEE, wrote, "We will be offering PSN users the opportunity to select two PS3 games from a list of five, as well as offering PSP users the opportunity to choose two games from a list of four. We will let you know exactly what games are available very soon."

American PlayStation Network subscribers have also been offered identity theft protection services, something that SCEE intends to replicate.

"As I have explained previously, creating a similar offering for the many countries within the SCEE region is a very complicated process. Each country has a different way of handling identity theft; some offer relatively sophisticated services whilst others are much more modest," explained Caplin.

"We are currently in the process of identifying how we manage this situation and once the programme is ready to launch, we will provide details of exactly which services are available in each country and explain how to sign up. We hope to do this early next week."

There is still no word as to when PlayStation Network services will resume.

Jheez, you sad acts need to get a life. Look out of the window(if you have one), notice that? It's called sunlight. Rare sight for most of you. "Oh no, PSN is down, whatever am I going to do!" Go outside, play some sport, go socialise for once.

Can't believe any of you have a right to slate Sony when they are obviously more important than you ever will be. Get out more, saddos.

Bought my PS3 on release date... never had ANY issues with it mechanically WHATsoever. Bought an Xbox 360 2 years ago.. the power pack went on it.. rang up Microsoft, cheaper to buy a new one they said. Bought a new one.. disc drive broke. If Sony's online functionabilty getting hacked is the worst thing I have to worry about.. I'd take PS3 over XBOX any day of the week.

I disagree with the whole shortlist of choosing PSP games. It should be all the games, bar the new ones. It's not fair making a shortlist of games, because they could be games you already own or the lower priced games that don't get many sales. All games other than new ones should be available for choosing.

well that seems good to me, to be fair this could of happened to any company and i agree with 'me' on that one. oh and this whole xbox vs ps3 thing, if you seriously are getting so much withdrawal from playing online you then need to go buy an xbox i have some advice.....maybe spent this time the psn is down to go and explore the thing outside your door called the real world and get a life.

The one thing is Sony is actually doing something. When this happens to most online companies they destroy the evidence of the breech, tell no one and claim it never happened.

Just check out the hacker sites. Personal information is being stolen everyday, but most companies don't want the bad press so they don't do anything and let you fend for yourself.

Wow, I think that this is some great news. Whilst I have missed my online gaming, especially my AC brotherhood but you know what, its not the end of the world. I'm also sick of the whole xbox vs PS3 system coming back into play, the whole argument is boring, get over it already. I am happy enough to wait for everything to be fixed and then I will enjoy my online experience more when I can get back online, but in the meantime, I have a life outside of my playstation. My only comment is, I hope that Sony takes as much time as they need to make sure everything runs smoothly when its all systems go again, I'm not going to let some little upstarts who wanted to hack the network stop me from enjoying a system which up until now (for myself as I don't know how others have been) has given me no problems!
