Amazing Alex (iOS, Android, $1.29)
From the creators of the smash hit Angry Birds, Amazing Alex is a physics-based puzzler involving a young boy who has to clean up around the house - and there's not a flying bird or oinking pig to be seen!
It's sort of similar to games like Cut the Rope. You have a handful of items on screen and you have to manipulate them to solve a puzzle, which could be as simple as getting footballs into a basket at the bottom of the screen or much, much harder.
In your quest to achieve each goal, you'll have to manipulate items such as books, pipes, balloons and platforms to solve the puzzle. The action starts in a classroom, which acts as the tutorial levels, but you'll eventually unlock levels in Alex's backyard, his bedroom and a treehouse. At the end of each level the player is scored out of three stars, literally, as each level has three stars that can be collected.
Amazing Alex is a lot slower paced than Angry Birds, and while it might not have the visceral satisfaction of knocking over blocks and pigs, it's a game that will test your grey matter.
