Wellington-based game developer PikPok has been nominated for a BAFTA in the British Academy Games Awards for its game Super Monsters Ate My Condo.

The company, which employs 80, was spun off from Sidhe in 2009 to design and develops games specifically for tablets and smart phones.

Super Monsters Ate My Condo is a free game that is a sequel to its earlier success Monsters Ate My Condo. Players have a two minute time limit to make quick colour matchings on screen with various monster characters.

Released in November, it was rated one of the Apple App Store's Best Casual Games of 2012 users had given it an average rating of five stars.

British Academy of Film and Television Arts, or BAFTA, has been giving awards to video games since 1998.

PikPok marketing manager Fleur Gunn said the entire Willis St studio in Wellington's CBD was "buzzing" with news of the nomination.

"We pride ourselves on producing extremely high quality titles and it is great to see our hard work recognised by such a distinguished institution," Gunn said.

"To be nominated for this award really highlights the quality of the games we produce as a studio and will bring a lot more recognition to our brand internationally."

Super Monsters Ate My Condo is nominated in the Mobile & Handheld category. The 53 other games nominated in various BAFTA game categories include LEGO: Lord of the Rings, FIFA 13, Halo 4 and Need For Speed Most Wanted. Winners will be announced in London on March 5.
