Tom Clancy's action-packed novels inspired not just films but dozens of video games.

Clancy, whose high-tech, Cold War thriller novels made him the most widely read and influential military novelist of his time, died Tuesday in Baltimore. He was 66,

The author's role in games began in the 1980s with classic interactive renditions of The Hunt For Red October and Red Storm Rising.

Clancy launched his own video game studio, Red Storm Entertainment, in 1996. Ubisoft Entertainment SA, which acquired the studio in 2000, continues to publish such gaming franchises adorned with his name as Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six and Splinter Cell.

He's also associated with the upcoming next-generation title The Division.

"We are saddened to learn of Tom Clancy's passing and our condolences go out to his family," Ubisoft said in a statement.

"Tom Clancy was an extraordinary author with a gift for creating detailed, engrossing fictional stories that captivated audiences around the world

"The teams at Ubisoft, especially at the Red Storm studio, are incredibly grateful to have collaborated with and learned from him, and we are humbled by the opportunity to carry on part of his legacy through our properties that bear his name."
