A humpback whale was discovered washed up on a South Canterbury beach last night.

Two Department of Conservation workers are at Pareora Beach assessing the situation, and a karakia will be performed by the Arowhenua runanga.

DOC senior ranger for bio-diversity Paul Gasson said it was not unusual for a humpback whale to be in the region as they are migrating north.

"We can’t speculate at the moment why it is there.

"There is no obvious cause why it turned up dead," Gasson said.

Brett Tainsh was walking his dog Buddy at 5pm last night when he discovered the marine mammal.

He and his wife have lived in the area for six years and walk along the beach every day.

They had never seen a whale washed up on shore before, he said.

Earlier in the week, a large whale thought to be a humpback or southern right whale, was seen in the shallows at Wellington's Breaker Bay.
