Otago Community Hospice will auction two works by celebrated artist Ralph Hotere tonight to help it fund demand on its services.

Hospice chief executive Jinny Green said the Hotere works, together valued at almost $25,000, were donated by Dunedin businessman Mike Bird from his private collection.

They will go under the hammer along with pieces from eight Otago artists in an effort to help raise $1.6m targeted this year.

"It's Hospice Awareness Week and referrals are at an all-time high," Green said.

"There are now more than 200 patients on the Hospice programme. I've been at the hospice for seven and-a-half years and in that time we've never had more than 200 patients on the programme.

"We can only attribute this to a greater awareness in the community-among patients, families and also referrers-of the value of hospice services."

Tonight's public art auction run for two hours from 5pm at the Dunedin Art School Gallery in 19 Riego Street (off Albany Street).

Hotere died in February last year.

Images of the artwork can be viewed online.

This week was also about raising awareness of hospice services and the issues surrounding death, such as what matters at the end of life, Green said.

"The philosophy of Hospice focuses on living every moment in whatever way is important. Beginning conversations about what really matters helps us to figure out what we want at the end of our life, but it also helps us to figure out what really matters right now - and that helps us to live every moment right now," Green said.
