An early morning fire at a truck yard west of Christchurch is being treated as suspicious, a fire service spokesman says.

A truck's freezer unit was on fire at a yard in Halkett St, West Melton.

The fire service was notified at 12.35am, and the blaze was well involved by the time firefighters arrived.

The cause of the fire was being treated as suspicious, and police had been notified, the spokesman said.

A fire investigator would be at the scene this morning.
