Fatal crash driver out of hospital
The driver of a modified car that crashed killing a brother and sister on a Dunedin motorway has been discharged from hospital.
Cameron Presland, 20, is recovering at his mother's Milton home after the crash on May 18. Ange Pedofsky said her son was taking things "one day at a time".
"A lot has happened. Things are hard at the moment. It's all a bit new still," she said.
Police allege Presland, who has a learner's licence, drove his illegally modified Honda Integra about 180kmh when it spun on a bend on Dunedin's southern motorway about 3am, hit a lamp-post, and then a tree just past the Green Island exit.
Shannon Kiriau, 22, and Presland's girlfriend Danielle Kiriau, 17, died at the scene. Passengers Caitlin Adams, 16, and Courtney Donald, 17, were injured. Adams was discharged that night, but Donald remains in a serious condition in Dunedin Public Hospital. A hospital spokeswoman said visitors to Donald were restricted.
Presland, who sustained internal injuries, was discharged from hospital on Thursday, the day of Danielle and Shannon's funeral. Pedofsky would not say if her son attended.
He was expected to make a full recovery, she said. She referred any further inquiries to his lawyer.
"At the end of the day, there is a big investigation going on," she said.
"It's not quite as simple as a car crash."
Police have said speed, alcohol and the failure to wear seat belts may have been factors in the crash.
Close friends - including Adams - said they would support Presland. Some said he ended up behind the wheel because the others were too intoxicated to drive after attending a party in Dunedin. It was Presland's first outing in the car since he swapped it two days earlier for his warranted, registered Mazda Bongo van, which was certified for modifications.
