Police want public help to find a missing American tourist believed to be tramping on the South Island's West Coast.

Philip Gerald Mohseni, 24, is from Portland, Oregon. A member of his family reported him missing as they had "not heard from him for some time", police say.

Mohseni is believed to have gone tramping in the Copland Track area in Westland on June 22 by himself, where he intended to stay for about three days.  After this, he was possibly heading to the Haast area.

Anyone with any information as to his whereabouts is asked to contact the Greymouth Police on 03 768 1600.
