Road spikes ended an 18-year-old's high speed bid to elude police near Rolleston, Canterbury.
The teenager continued driving on a burst tyre for nearly five kilometres on State Highway 1 before drifting off the road and hitting a vehicle.
The incident, about 4.30pm on Saturday, came only days after Christchurch motorcylist Darren Lee Wilson, 26, died after crashing while fleeing police.
Sergeant Franco Lovrich said the 18-year-old had phoned police in a "delusional" state.
Police managed to work out his location and went to Selwyn Lake Rd to speak to him. However, he drove off and turned into Main South Rd.
A short pursuit ensued, which was called off due to his dangerous driving, Lovrich said.
The driver reached speeds of about 140kmh and overtook other motorists dangerously, he said.
Police further up the road laid spikes on the highway as he approached.
He drifted off the road just south of Rolleston, hitting a car that had been pulled over as he approached.
The 18-year-old was arrested and charged with reckless driving and failing to stop for police. He was being assessed at Hillmorton Hospital, Lovrich said.
The car he hit sustained only minor panel damage.
Wilson died on Thursday when he was flung from his bike after hitting a car turning into the New Brighton Surf Club car park.
Police pursued him after he rode past an unmarked police car at speed, and ran a stop sign to evade the pursuit.
Officers spent about 30 minutes performing CPR, but he died at the scene.
Police said earlier that Wilson's death was a reminder to motorists about the dangers of failing to stop.
"If the rider had actually stopped he'd be alive," Superintendent Andy McGregor said.
Wilson's funeral will be held on Friday.
