Girl, 11, hit by large truck
A young girl has suffered serious injuries after being hit and dragged under a truck in Ashburton.
The 11-year-old girl had been with a friend crossing State Highway One near KFC, when she was hit by a large truck and trailer unit at about 4.45pm yesterday.
"She has walked out in between some parked vehicles and been clipped by a fully laden truck and trailer unit," Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said.
The girl had been dragged a "considerable distance".
She was helped by members of the public until an ambulance arrived, Banfield said.
She was taken to Ashburton Hospital in a critical condition, and was later transferred to Christchurch Hospital, where she is in a serious but stable condition.
The truck belonged to ACL Contracting Limited.
ACL chief executive Gary Casey said the driver was "very shaken up", and was receiving support.
"Our thoughts first and foremost are with the young girl and her family at this stage," Casey said.
"This is a terrible time for all those involved and we are supporting our staff who were involved as well."
Banfield said the truck driver was cooperating with police inquiries, but it was too early to determine how the incident occurred.
"It's early days. I can't even say who we feel was at fault.
"It's pretty fair to say that he [the driver] has had a hell of a fright. There's nothing nice about having a young child run over by your truck."
Police are speaking to witnesses, and the Serious Crash Unit and the Heavy Vehicle Investigation Unit are investigating.
Anyone with further information is asked to contact Sergeant Bryan Ennis at Ashburton Police.
