Two youths allegedly stabbed numerous car tyres and ransacked a scout den during a week-long crime spree fuelled by ''random stupidity''.

The 16-year-old boys were arrested after police raided a home in Woodend, north of Christchurch, yesterday, police said this morning.

Inside the property, investigators recovered thousands of dollars worth of musical equipment - speakers, amps and mixers - stolen from the Woodend Scout Den last week.

Constable Mike Kneebone said police believed the pair were involved in a week-long crime spree which began about June 22.

During that period, up to 10 cars in the small North Canterbury town had their tyres stabbed with a knife.

The scout den was also burgled and the offenders ''let loose with fire extinguishers and kicked in cupboards - things like that'', Kneebone said.

The arrested youths had left school. They admitted what they had done was ''just random stupidity'', he said.

''There was no real motive to their madness.''

The pair had been charged with burglary and would appear in the Christchurch Youth Court next week.

Further charges were likely, Kneebone said.
