A diverse lineup of international writers has been announced by the organisers of Christchurch's literary festival.

Eleanor Catton, the Christchurch-raised 2013 Man Booker Prize winner, will headline the re-branded WORD Christchurch Writers & Readers Festival next month.

The two-yearly event, last held in the Hagley Park Dome in 2012, was formerly known as the Christchurch Writers' Festival.

This year's five-day programme features more than 100 writers, thinkers, commentators and performers from New Zealand and around the world across 68 events.

It includes a concert by American songwriter Kristin Hersh, an interview with award-winning foreign correspondent Luke Harding - the author of books on Edward Snowden and Julian Assange's WikiLeaks, a conversation between writer Steve Braunias and the founder of satirical website The Civilian, and a day of free family events.

Audiences will also get the chance to hear Catton discuss writing, fame and the West Coast with fellow writer Kate de Goldi during The Luminary: Eleanor Catton in the Transitional Cathedral.

The lineup of international guests includes world cup poetry slam winner Anis Mojgani, Australian philosopher Damon Young and New York food writer Ruth Reichl.

WORD Christchurch literary director Rachael King said the programme was the most varied in the festival's history. "It is both international in its scope and intensely local, with sessions that are very relevant to Christchurch audiences, including the Shigeru Ban: Cardboard Cathedral book launch."
