Allegations of assault and damage to a car were made to Timaru police by neighbours on Harper St at 11pm last night.

Sergeant Ian Howard said that during the incident an occupant at a house cut his head when he went through a window. He is then alleged to have picked up a piece of wood as if he was going to use it as a weapon.

He was taken to hospital for treatment.

''The verbal arguments and accusations between the neighbours spread to different properties,'' Howard said.

Those involved were between their late 30 and early 40s, he said.

The cause of the incident and allegations relating to it were still being investigated. No more details were available.
