A Christchurch man has been denied bail after an alleged "serious" domestic incident last night left a woman with a broken back and ribs.

The 45-year-old woman is in Christchurch Hospital in very serious condition with fractures to her ribs and vertebrae.

Russell Alan Moa, 46, a decorator from Sockburn, appeared before Judge Emma Smith in the Christchurch District Court today and was remanded without plea on a charge of intentionally injuring the woman.

Moa and the woman knew each other.

Judge Smith said the police opposed bail because of the woman's "extraordinary injuries", photographs of which had been provided in court.

Defence counsel Michael Knowles said Moa denied causing the woman's injuries.

Judge Smith refused bail and remanded Moa in custody for an appearance by video-link from the prison on August 4.

She said his application may be reconsidered at a later appearance for release on electronically monitored bail.

Police are today carrying out a scene examination in Cheyenne St, Sockburn.

Detective Sergeant Jason Stewart described the alleged assault as "serious", but it was "unknown at this stage" whether a weapon was involved.

"Further charges may be pending," he said.
