The Dutch Embassy in Wellington and its consulates in Auckland and Christchurch have opened condolence books for people wanting to pay their respects to victims of flight MH17.

Of the 298 people killed when the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 was shot down in eastern Ukraine last week, 193 were from the Netherlands.

The embassy and consulate condolence books will be open from 10am to midday until Thursday.

An online condolence book - www.condoleance.nl - has already been signed by hundreds of people from around the world, including several from New Zealand, which has a substantial community of people with Dutch roots and links.

Typical of the messages is one from Alan Milewczyk, who said, ''Like most people I was shocked to hear the news on Thursday that a civilian flight had been shot down over Ukraine. But I have been truly horrified by the unfolding news, the dreadful death toll and the callous attitude of the rebels in the area.''

Frank Mussche of Edmonton, Canada, wrote ''I am sure that I can speak for all the Dutch people in Canada who are shedding tears on this extremely tragic event! Shame on Putin!''

And Michael C  Foy said ''As an airline crew member, and as a human being, I am devastated by such an horrific and harrowing incident that has destroyed so many lives and affected so poignantly not only the Dutch and Malaysian people, but the Australian, Indonesian, British, German, Belgian, Filipino, Canadian and New Zealand people as well. There are no words we can offer the families that will ease the shock and torment of what has occurred.''
