Northern Irishman John-Paul Nelson died after crashing head-on into a freight truck carrying offal in Canterbury.

The 30-year-old's Toyota ute flipped onto its roof and the truck jack-knifed in the smash on State Highway 1, south of Ashburton, about 8.30pm yesterday.

Sergeant Bryan Ennis said the agricultural worker, who had been in New Zealand since November 2013 and lived in Mid Canterbury, crossed the centre line and ploughed into the southbound Hilton Haulage truck and trailer unit.

The truck was headed from Ashburton to Timaru.

Offal was strewn across the road, which the freight company cleared in the hours after the crash.

Police were yet to determine the cause of the crash, Ennis said.

The British embassy had notified the man's next of kin.

The Hilton Haulage truck driver, a man in his 30s, was at home nursing bruised knees. Hilton Haulage chief executive Scott Crampton said the employee would return to work when he was ready.

Ashburton volunteer fire brigade chief fire officer Alan Burgess said four fire crews from the Hinds and Ashburton stations attended the crash.

They returned about 1am today to recover the driver's body, Burgess said.
