A teenage girl was grabbed from behind and threatened in an Christchurch assault yesterday.

A man grabbed the 15-year-old after she got off the Metro Star bus on Edgeware Rd, near Manchester St, about 11am, police said.

He told her to "keep walking" as he forced her a short distance down the road, before she screamed out to get the attention of two women on the opposite side of the road.

The man let go of the girl and fled down Manchester St.

Police are concerned about the motive of the attack, and ask the two women who helped the teenager and gave her bus money to call Detective Brett Chesterman on (03) 363 7659.
