The wild weather lashing the South Island is on its way out, although snow is expected in some high passes.

Met Service duty forecaster Philippa Murdoch said the weather was easing in Canterbury and on the West Coast.

She said there was a bit of rain in Canterbury currently, but that would gradually clear and the strong northwesterlies would ease off.

Snow is forecast to fall on South Island passes tonight.

The Mets Service has issued warnings for the Arthur's, Porters and Lewis passes.

Some light showers are expected to turn to snow this afternoon on the Lewis Pass, with up to 2cm expected above 800m.

Meanwhile, snow flurries are expected this afternoon in Arthur's Pass and will continue through to tonight.

Occasional snow is expected this afternoon and early evening on Porters Pass. Between 4 and 8cm could accumulate above 700m with smaller amounts to 400m.

A snow warning for the Lindis Pass has been lifted.

Tomorrow and Tuesday will be fine in Canterbury with some northeasterly winds.

Murdoch said by Wednesday there would be a southwest change that would bring a few showers and Thursday would would flip between strong northwest and a southwest winds.

"It will be a bit of a mixed bag for Canterbury coming up, but it is looking like the next few days will be fine."

Christchurch has an expected high of 10degC today, and will drop to -1degC overnight.

Meanwhile, showers on the West Coast will be heavier in the north today, but will be cleared by this evening.

Next week would bring more showers on Tuesday and rain on Wednesday and heavier rain again on Thursday.

The Fire Service reported no problems due to weather overnight.
