Runaway lorry plunges into yard

A runaway lorry filled with shingle rolled about 50 metres down a residential hillside street, taking out a ute, letterboxes and several bushes before plunging over a bank. 

Firefighters were called to the scene in Mt Pleasant, Christchurch, after the handbrake on a Jamon Construction truck apparently failed about 3pm yesterday.

Woolston Fire Brigade station officer Ralph Moore said it was lucky Mt Pleasant Primary School was five minutes away from finishing for the day, or Cannon Hill Cres footpath would have been crowded with children.

The truck, with no driver on board, mounted the kerb and rolled about 50m before plunging over the bank into someone's yard.

''It really took off,'' Moore said. ''You've got a tremendous weight on it. It's like a train. Once they start rolling, you just don't stop them with anything.''

A Hilux ute hit by the truck on its way down the hill was ''tossed'' over a bank and into a neighbouring driveway, Moore said. 

The truck plunged a further 20m over a bank and into a resident's steps and handrails, which were destroyed. 

''The owner was home. He said it sounded like a 6.0 magnitude earthquake,'' Moore said. 

''You just look at the carnage it caused at that short distance. It was lucky it didn't hit the house itself.''

Jamon Construction said they had no comment to make on the incident.

A small amount of hydraulic fuel leaked from the crashed truck. 

Police attended the scene, and no-one was injured.
