A man who stabbed and killed a woman while her young daughter was in the house has lost an appeal against his sentence.

Paul Andrew Gottermeyer pleaded guilty to murdering a 24-year-old woman at her Christchurch home on July 11, 2012.

The victim's name and her daughter's name have been suppressed.

Gottermeyer, now 31, was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a non-parole period of 10 years.

The minimum term was increased to 12 years on appeal by the Crown.

Gottermeyer appealed against the sentence, arguing that he suffered from psychiatric problems and there was evidence the attack would not have happened if he had not been experiencing a major depressive episode.

He claimed his responsibility for stabbing the woman and slashing her throat was diminished.

The Supreme Court, in a judgment released today, said Gottermeyer's mental health issues had been taken into account by the Court of Appeal.

"It has not been shown that there was any error of principle in the Court of Appeal's approach and no miscarriage of justice arises," the judgment said.
