A man brandished a gun at a West Coast shopkeeper before fleeing with cash and cigarettes on Friday.

West Coast police want to hear from the public following a robbery at a Blaketown dairy, in Greymouth, about 7pm.

Police say a man came into the shop and threatened the shopkeeper with what appeared to be a firearm and demanded money.

He left with some cash and cigarettes.

"The offender is described as dark skinned, about 5 feet 6 inches tall and wearing a black hoodie, black track pants and dark shoes. He had a short beard," a police spokesman said.

Police are seeking information from anyone who was in the area on Friday evening and saw the man or has information relating to this incident.
