Christchurch's United States Antarctic Programme best exemplifies the depth of the relationship between the US and New Zealand, US ambassador David Huebner says.
Huebner made his first visit to the city today after becoming America's ambassador to New Zealand late last year.
He visited the programme's base in the city this morning, before meeting Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker and engagements at Canterbury and Lincoln universities.
``It's [the Antarctic programme] not just symbolic - it's the most successful, long-term scientific partnership on the planet,'' he said.
Huebner, who was a lawyer in Shanghai before being confirmed in his ambassadorial role, will also travel to Dunedin during his southern tour, where he will meet Mayor Peter Chin and visit University of Otago.
