A convicted paedophile from Germany with a false Christchurch identity was among hundreds of foreign nationals caught at the New Zealand border, Immigration New Zealand says.

Immigration officials refused entry to 777 foreigners in the 2012/13 financial year, according to the latest Year at the Border report.

The report included the case of a German who had twice been convicted of sex offences against children. German authorities warned Immigration NZ he was attempting to enter the country.

An online search of the passenger's name found a profile containing pictures and films that gave the false impression he lived and worked in Christchurch.

Officials also uncovered a website he had created advertising personalised children's books.

Parents were required to provide details of their children, which he used as a means of identifying and grooming victims.

When the man arrived at customs his baggage was searched, and he was found to have more than 570 electronic books compiled from more than 35,000 images of sexual acts between young children. He was charged, convicted and sentenced to 10 months in prison before being deported back to Germany.

The top five nationalities to be refused entry were Malaysia, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Australia. The oldest person to enter the country was a 101-year-old passenger, the report showed. Fairfax NZ
