NEW HOME: The City Mission historic chapel.

The Christchurch City Mission's historic chapel negotiated its way through city traffic to a new home yesterday.

The chapel was moved from the mission's old building on Hereford St to a site across the road, alongside the organisation's new location.

Built in 1888, the Chapel of St Luke was a cemetery chapel on Rutherford St, Woolston for more than half a century. It became the chapel for the Jubilee Hospital Complex in 1949.

When the complex closed in 1990 the chapel was moved to Hereford St.

City missioner Michael Gorman said the chapel had now been moved because it was largely obscured at the old site and "squashed into the available space we had at the time".
