If you were grizzling about flights leaving late over the holiday season you were not alone, both domestic carriers saw a drop in their on-time departure rates* in December.

Air New Zealand recorded a 77.7 per cent on-time departure performance for domestic flights, down from 82.3 per cent in November.

Domestic budget rival Jetstar managed to get 83.3 per cent of its flights away on time - down from 88.1 per cent in November - extending its run of out-performing Air New Zealand to eight of the past 12 months.

Grant Kerr, Jetstar head of New Zealand, said the airline had focused on improving its domestic reliability and to come out ahead of a full-service competitor was gratifying.

However, Jetstar operates only nine aircraft in New Zealand and its network is limited to jet operations on the main trunk routes.

That compares to Air New Zealand's more complex nationwide network of 24 destinations using a mixed fleet of 72 aircraft.

* A flight is considered to be on time if it leaves within 10 minutes of the time stated on the boarding pass.
