The future of Christ Church Cathedral is yet to be revealed.

A long-awaited announcement on how the deadlock over Christ Church Cathedral will be broken is expected soon.

The Government was expected to make an announcement in the last two weeks, but nothing had yet been made public.

Plans could now be made public in the next two weeks, according to people close to the process.

The Anglican cathedral had been left damaged in Christchurch's city centre for more than five years, with no clear decision on its possible fate.

Anglican leaders had decided to demolish the cathedral and replace it with a modern building, but those plans were caught up in legal challenges.

The Government last year appointed mediator Miram Dean, QC, in an attempt to break the deadlock over the building.

Church leaders and the Government announced in December that reinstating the cathedral was being considered.
