Canterbury's leading builder with $135.3 million of work last year was Mike Greer Homes, whose average cost a square metre is noticeably lower than rivals.

The What's On report produced for the industry tracks the building consents of the region's new home builders and provides an insight into the current costs of new home building.

The report is based on building consents issued by local authorities and the values of construction work but does not include land or fittings.

Builders subscribe to it to see how well their competition is doing.

The latest report for the 2013 year has been released and a copy obtained by The Press.

Stonewood Homes was the second biggest builder at $133m of consented home building, only $2m behind Greer.

Greer's average price is $237,377 for a dwelling (excluding land and fittings) and average size is 184 square metres.

That means Greer's building cost is around $1290 per sqm on average.

Greer consented 570 dwellings in Canterbury last year worth $135.3m. The houses were slightly smaller on average than Stonewood's.

Stonewood consented 407 dwellings worth $133.05m. Its average cost per dwelling was $326,894 and its average size was 193sqm. That means an average cost of $1693 per sqm for Stonewood.

The same exercise produces an average cost of $1665 per sqm for Golden Homes, the third biggest builder which consented 230 dwellings worth $62.4m in 2013.

Ryman Healthcare is tops in the small home category, consenting 87 at of $10.2m. The average was about $116,786 for 104sqm, which gives a per sqm cost of $1123.

Greer followed at 69 worth $8m an average size of 100sqm at an average cost of $116,415, giving a cost of $1164 per sqm.
